Sidelined by a potentially career-ending injury, the only thing hockey player Ryan Douglas should be thinking about is his recovery. But after sharing a near death experience with a spunky brunette, the only thing on his mind is five and a half feet of sexy sarcasm. And he’ll do whatever it takes to get her back in his bed—even if it means playing dirty.
Chloe Jacobs is done with fairytales. And men. She’s kissed her share of frogs and what’s it gotten her? Dumped by text—again. The last thing she needs is a pushy, arrogant hockey player testing her resolve. Especially one who’s sinfully good with his hands and thinks date-by-blackmail is a perfectly acceptable social convention.
Ryan wants to play games? Fine by her, but this is one faceoff he’s going to lose.
Chloe – “The sad truth was, she had terrible taste in men. Clearly her instincts were broken. Because if there was a creep within an eight block radius, she’d probably dated him. Sure there were lots of eligible males in New York, but that didn’t make them men. It just made them horny. She’d been riding the loser train as long as she could remember, and she still wouldn’t know a decent man if she tripped over him and landed on his disco stick.
Ryan – He snorted. Thank God for small favors. It would take a strong man to handle all that sass on a daily basis. Or a masochist.
Good. Lord. This book takes the prize for explosive chemistry right out of the starting gate! And the flames don’t die down even when you reach the final page. A blizzard? I’m surprised the snow didn’t melt!
Her protests weren’t fooling him. Like a stick of dynamite, she was burning hot under all that bravado.
“After all, you did try to climb me like a tree downstairs.”
When his thumb made a lazy pass across her lower vertebrae, her body responded immediately. Such a simple thing, but it warmed her belly, lust pooling hot and heavy. Molten even. His touch had that effect. The man could take her from ho-hum to total eruption in a heartbeat. Like Maytag, he was built strong to last long. F*ck. Rest. Repeat.
I was hooked from the first chapter – and that’s typically not an easy sell for me as often anymore since many of these romances read so similar. Jennifer Bonds’ writing flows so easily and steadily, and she makes this story an entertaining and feel-good read. It may not have had twists and turns and surprise elements, but even though the storyline was predictable, Bonds made it a fun reading journey: I liked both Ryan AND Chloe, and thoroughly enjoyed their sweet, sexy bantering and Chloe’s sass; the story moved along at a believable and steady pace; and both characters were realistic, relatable and well developed. Simply put, I loved the chemistry between these two, both when things were going good and when they were struggling with the fallout from New Year’s Eve. These two characters just clicked, and they had the emotional love and physically satisfying connection that we all hope to find one day.
Even though Bash, Ryan’s best friend since college days who actually ended up with his (Ryan’s) ex-girlfriend when she thought he was washed up from an injury, had a small role in the book, when he did get story time, he delivered.
“I have to be honest, I was pulling for you. You’re good for Ryan. I’ve never seen him that happy before, but if one bullshit article in the tabloids is all it takes for you to cut and run, maybe it’s best you part ways now because you don’t deserve him.”
The “huh?” part?
Accidents and surprises happen, but if Chloe was on the pill, it seems as if Ryan should or would have been surprised about her pregnancy announcement, or one of them would have hinted at it.

Yes! It was one of my favorite fun, sexy and satisfying reads. Ryan is a definite book boyfriend keeper!
