When I was fourteen years old, I killed for the first time. That day I learned cruelty wasn’t only within the walls we had just escaped.
It hasn’t been easy growing up in the middle of a war. A struggle to find shelter. Fighting to protect our bodies against the corruption of the streets. Nobody cared about the street kids who had to beg and steal to eat.
Now we are the Portland Street Kings – A family forged through loyalty not blood. To get through this life of broken dreams alive, we’ve become hard, uncaring and merciless. We do what must be done to keep our family safe, we will harm those who stand against us.
We have it all, feared and respected by those on the streets. Then she collided into my world, and with her came demons from my past, back to haunt us all.
Wow. Simply put, this is a good book. Raw emotion. Struggle. Denial. Suspense. Drama. Romance. Steam. Sizzle. Gang violence.
Slater is scary. Something about Piper calls to him, haunts him. His past is responsible for a horrible collection of inner demons – not just for Slater, but for his brothers and sister that he led away from the He** incurred by an abusive foster dad when they were young kids and continues to keep safe at all costs. The same foster care system threatens to divide them. Slater doesn’t have time or need for Piper, but he can’t let her go. She reminds him of his sister Mia who was killed by the abusive foster dad. Danger pulls her back under his care after he learns she is also a product of the foster care system and she has become a social worker to make a difference. Through a brutal twist of emotionally charged surprises, the storyline comes full circle.
Loved the suspenseful and fast-paced story, steamy scenes between Slater and Piper – especially as their relationship evolved past the slam-bam stage, and the character development. It was hard not to be drawn in from the start, and am curious how the next installment will ride out between Mack and Lana.
